Summer 2026 Artist Residency

The Brookline Arts Center is seeking proposals for a 12-week artist residency in our Annex Gallery, located in a historic firehouse turned arts center in Brookline, MA. One dynamic solo artist or collaborative group will have the opportunity to experiment and grow their body of work with the support of the BAC. Artist(s) selected will be given 6 weeks of studio time and project development in the Annex Gallery to design, create, and install their work in our unique gallery space. This work will then be exhibited in the Annex Gallery for 6 weeks following the residency. Selected artist(s) will receive a stipend of $2,500 for the residency.

Project Details

Artist(s) are expected to create a site-specific, original installation or series of work for our Annex Gallery while in residence at the BAC. A site visit prior to submission is strongly encouraged. Artist(s) are encouraged to interact with the environment of the BAC and the greater community of Brookline throughout the 12-week residency program. Exploration of and interaction with the community includes an open studio experience and a culiminating reception showcasing the work. 
  • Artist(s) selected will be given 6 weeks of studio time in the Annex Gallery to design, create, and install their work in our unique gallery space. This body of work will then be exhibited in the Annex Gallery for 6 weeks following the residency.
  • Artist(s) are expected to interact with BAC students in the form of a workshop and/or studio visits during their residency.
  • One public talk and/or workshop will also be developed and presented, led by the artist(s) in residence with the goal of enriching the community through artistic engagement.  


Residency Details

  • Selected artist(s) will receive a stipend of $2,500 for the residency. 
  • Artist(s) are responsible for the procurement of art materials, furniture, and supplies.
  • Housing, transportation, and meals are the responsibility of the artist(s).
  • Projects should be self-directed.

Benefits of the program include:
  • Artist(s) will be given 24-hour access to 2D, ceramics and small metals studio (when classes are not in session) as well as gallery space to be used for art-making and storing artworks and materials. 
  • Artist(s) will also be allowed use of studio equipment, machines and tools (with proper instruction)
  • Artist(s) will have opportunities to take a class or workshop with BAC Faculty
  • The BAC will offer the artist(s) a formal critique by a visiting artist or faculty or staff member at the midpoint and end of the residency, as well as throughout as needed.
  • Artist(s) will collaborate with our administrative and marketing team on the development and design of exhibition materials, including show cards, gallery wall titles and text, and promotional materials


Application Deadline

The deadline to apply is April 3rd, 2026, at 11:59 pm EST. Late applications will not be considered. Please refer to the “How to Apply” section below for more application details.


Eligibility

  • All applicants must be 18+
  • Preference given to artists who incorporate engagement with BAC students or the local community.
  • Artists residing in the United States, with priority given to artists residing in New England


Gallery Specifications

The Annex Gallery is approximately 127 square feet and includes a hanging wall that is 12′ tall x 18′ long. The Gallery serves as the artist’s studio for the first 4 weeks of the residency and is then converted to the exhibit space for the following 4 weeks.

Please compile one PDF document made up of the submission materials listed below.

  • Artist Statement
  • Images

Please include 5-10 images of recent work in your PDF document. Directly underneath each image, please provide the following information: title, media, dimensions and year completed.

Please title your document: LastName_FirstName_BACResidency2026.pdf and apply by emailing the PDF to opencalls@brooklineartscenter.com with the subject line “BAC Residency Application”.


Notification
Artists will be notified of their status via e-mail by 5:00 pm on May 1st, 2026. If necessary, the selection committee may invite finalists to present their proposals virtually. If your proposal is selected, BAC staff will schedule a meeting with you to discuss project logistics.
